Business of the Month: Waste Management

Category : In the News , Member Events

Waste Management High Acres Open House

2017 High Acres Open House

Each year, Americans generate more than 250 million tons of garbage, of which we recycle almost 100 million tons. Garbage isn’t something that we like to think about very often, but the work of our country’s landfill and recycling companies is vital for keeping our areas clean and reducing the possibility of illness.

In our area, Waste Management (WM) is one such company, and they are the Canal Connection Business of the Month for August. WM is the leading provider of comprehensive waste management services in North America. They provide services that range from collection and disposal for individuals and businesses to recycling and renewable energy generation.

At High Acres Landfill, the Focus is Sustainability

In our Palmyra/Macedon/Walworth area, WM is represented by High Acres Landfill and Recycling Center. A division of Waste Management of New York, LLC, the facility has provided environmentally responsible solid waste management to the region since 1971. High Acres provides organics recycling, renewable energy production, and wildlife habitat management. It’s a non-hazardous facility with operating permits from the NYS Dept of Environmental Conservation.

Waste Management High Acres

High Acres Nature Trail

Located on roughly 1,000 acres straddling the Perinton/Macedon border, the facility is far more than a garbage dump. It includes the award-winning High Acres Nature Area, 250 acres of community trails, wildlife habitat protection, and interactive learning options. It’s certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council, and welcomes the public to come and walk, jog, run, or ski the four miles of trails.

Renewable Energy is Key

Today’s modern, engineered landfill is an environmentally sound system for waste disposal. Landfills offer a clean, renewable energy resource that is generated  through the decomposition of the waste. This resource is called landfill gas, and it’s a natural byproduct of waste as it decomposes.

Some landfills collect this gas and burn it—destroying a substance that can, when used properly, can bring great benefit to our communities. At High Acres, this gas is used to create green energy, by turning it into electricity. The facility generates enough energy to power nearly 10,000 homes and replace 180,000 barrels of oil each year.

All are Welcome
Waste Management High Acres Scout Day

Scout Day at High Acres

You might not think that visiting a landfill would be much fun, but at High Acres, frequent events showcase the facility and provide an afternoon of entertainment and learning for the whole family. An annual open house features local vendors, demonstrations, and free food. Girl and Boy Scouts and school groups often tour the facility to learn more about the waste cycle and picnic at the Nature Area. Three baseball fields at High Acres are maintained by WM for the enjoyment of area residents. WM also provides an area on the landfill property for a training facility used by local fire departments.

Hill Cumorah Pageant Returns for 80th Year

Hill Cumorah, Palmyra

Hill Cumorah Pageant, Palmyra, NY

What other Western New York event features a free performance with hundreds of performers and amazing outdoor special effects? That’s right – the annual Hill Cumorah Pageant, the oldest and largest outdoor theatrical productions in America, is back in its 80th year of production.

A Long and Colorful History

The first Hill Cumorah Pageant featured a handful of performers in rented costumes using car headlights as spotlights. A lot has changed as the pageant, now a Western New York tradition, celebrates its 80th birthday. With a water features, explosions, earthquakes and balls of fire, the Hill Cumorah Pageant is not your average summer event. It’s a must-see, free event that appeals to all ages.

“I hear from people who’ve said they’ve always wanted to go but never have,” said Neil Pitts, pageant president. “It’s a wonderful family experience. We’d like people to come and experience the grandeur of the performance and have special feelings their hearts as they watch these scenes from the Bible and Book of Mormon. We want people to walk away with a sense that this was an awesome experience!”

Performances Begin July 14

The pageant kicks off its week of performances Fri., July 14 at dusk. The pageant, which is free and family-friendly, is something of a theatrical miracle. More than 750 volunteers are cast into 1,200 roles within hours of arriving.  After just one week of rigorous rehearsals, the show opens.  Volunteers in the performance and on staff come to Western New York at their own expense from around the world. They do not come to Palmyra just to practice their sword fighting skills and learn dances, or to wear costumes and wigs.  For these people, this is a time of spiritual renewal in the cradle of their faith. In addition to rehearsals, the cast also squeezes in more than 1,800 hours of volunteer service in Wayne, Ontario and Monroe counties.

Chamber Member Presents Palmyra Pageant

The Pageant is presented annually by Canal Connection Chamber of Commerce member The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Performances by the all-volunteer cast are July 14-15 and 18-22 and begin nightly at 9 p.m. There is seating for more than 7,000 guests. Visitors this year will also be able to don pageant costumes for photo booth pictures. Food is provided on-site by local service groups. Food tents open at 5 p.m. The Hill Cumorah is located on Highway 21, two miles north of Interstate 90, Exit 43. Parking and admission are free.  Headsets are provided for Spanish translation, and American Sign Language interpretation is provided.
